The 4Cs of Diamonds — A Simple Breakdown
Understanding the 4Cs: A Simple Guide
When it comes to choosing a diamond, the 4Cs are your best friends. They help you understand exactly what you're buying—making sure the diamond you choose matches your style, budget, and the story you want to tell.
Here's what you need to know:
Cut: The Sparkle Factor
"Cut" doesn’t mean shape (like round or oval)—it’s all about how well the diamond’s facets reflect light.
A better cut equals more sparkle, brilliance, and beauty.
Color: Clear and Simple
Diamonds are graded on color, from D (completely colorless) to Z (lightly tinted yellow or brown).
The closer to D, the rarer and generally more valuable the diamond. Lab-grown diamonds tend to score very high on the color scale—and often at a better price.
Clarity: Inside and Out
"Clarity" measures how clean the diamond is, referring to the presence of tiny inclusions (internal characteristics) or surface blemishes.
Grades range from Flawless (F) to Included (I1-I3). Most imperfections are invisible to the naked eye, so you don't need perfection to find a beautiful diamond.
Carat: Weight and Presence
"Carat" indicates a diamond’s weight—and generally how large it appears.
But remember: a beautifully cut 0.90-carat diamond often looks as impressive (and costs less) compared to a poorly cut 1.00-carat stone.
