A diamond certificate, also called a grading report, is an independent report created by a professional gemological laboratory. It records the diamond’s key characteristics, including cut, color, clarity, carat weight, measurements, polish, symmetry, and whether the diamond is lab-grown or mined.

In simple terms, a diamond certificate helps you know exactly what you are buying.

Why Diamond Certification Matters

When you are choosing a diamond, especially online or for a custom jewelry piece, a certificate gives you confidence. It helps confirm that the diamond matches the details you were promised, including its size, quality grade, and origin.

For lab-grown diamonds, certification is especially helpful because it clearly identifies the diamond as lab-grown and provides a professional record of its quality. This makes the buying process more transparent and easier to understand.

What Does a Diamond Certificate Include?

A diamond certificate usually includes important details such as:

The report number allows you to look up the diamond through the grading lab’s database, so you can confirm that the certificate matches the diamond.

Trusted Diamond Grading Labs

Not all grading labs are the same, and some are more recognized in the jewelry industry than others. Here are a few well-known diamond grading laboratories:

IGI — International Gemological Institute

IGI is one of the most widely used grading labs for lab-grown diamonds. It is especially common in the lab-grown diamond market and provides detailed reports that are easy for customers to understand.

GIA — Gemological Institute of America

GIA is one of the most recognized diamond grading laboratories in the world. It is well known for strict grading standards and is often associated with mined diamonds, though it also provides reports for lab-grown diamonds.

GCAL — Gem Certification & Assurance Lab

GCAL is known for detailed diamond grading reports and additional quality assurances. It is used by some retailers for both mined and lab-grown diamonds.

HRD Antwerp

HRD Antwerp is a respected European grading laboratory. It is more commonly seen in Europe and less common in the North American lab-grown diamond market.

Do All Diamonds Need a Certificate?

Not every small diamond needs its own individual certificate. For example, very small accent stones or pavé diamonds are usually not certified one by one because the certification cost may be higher than the value of the individual stone.

For center stones and larger diamonds, certification is much more important. It gives you a clear record of the diamond’s quality and helps you compare diamonds more confidently.

At Luxsong, we provide free IGI certification for diamonds 0.5 carats and above. For diamonds smaller than 0.5 carats, certification may be available upon request for an additional fee.

Lab-Grown Diamonds Should Be Clearly Identified

A lab-grown diamond certificate should clearly state that the diamond is lab-grown. This is important because lab-grown diamonds and mined diamonds have the same chemical and optical properties, but they have different origins.

Clear labeling protects the customer and keeps the buying process honest. If a report does not clearly identify the diamond’s origin, it is worth asking more questions before purchasing.
